Scott raced from the office and made his way into town, checking the time on his phone. He darted around the backstreets looking for parking. Having made the rest of the journey on foot, he breezed into the restaurant and spotted Cara towards the far end.

“You’re ten minutes late!” Cara said.

“Sorry, sweetheart. I had to wrap up an interview. Happy anniversary,” Scott said as he leant down and gave her a kiss. He took a seat opposite her. She looked divine, as usual. Her dark hair was long and shiny. She had a tight, figure-hugging light cream jumper, skin-tight jeans, and heeled court shoes.

He smiled and took in her beauty, cherishing the moment. “The Chilli Pickle. A perfect setting with the perfect date.”

Cara sipped a drink and offered him a warm smile. “This is where we had our first date. I see history has repeated itself again. I made the effort to dress up, and you’ve turned up in a crumpled suit.”

Scott laughed as he broke off a piece of poppadom and dipped it in the tray of chutneys. It wasn’t long before they ordered food and soaked up the ambience of this bright and colourful restaurant. The aroma of herbs and spices wafted around the tables as waiters took dishes to other diners. Every so often, Cara would lift her head and sniff like a little rabbit as she took in the infusion of Asian aromas.

“Have you ever been to India?” Scott asked.

“No. Never. I’d love to go. The backstreet markets of Mumbai, the Taj Mahal in Agra, Agra Fort, the beaches of Goa, Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya, and so many other places. There’s so much culture and history. It would be amazing.”

“Well, let’s do it. Let’s book something when we get home tonight. My anniversary gift to you.”

Cara sat back in her chair, wide-eyed. “Are you serious?”

Scott nodded. “Absolutely. I’ve never been. It would be something new for both of us.”

Cara reached out and held Scott’s hand. “I love you, Scottie. I can’t believe that twelve months ago we were sitting here on our first date. At the time I didn’t even know if we would have a second date. But I was instantly attracted to you. And now I can’t imagine my life without you.”

Scott squeezed her fingers. He felt the same as a wave of emotion washed over him. The hairs on his arms stood up as a shiver raced down his spine. “You’ve changed my life too. I won’t lie. I wasn’t in a very good place when we first met. I was struggling with life and then you came along. You’ve helped me in more ways than you can ever imagine.” He fell silent for a few moments and played around with the rice on his plate.

Cara tugged on his hand. “Oi, what’s the matter?”

Scott shook his head and cleared his throat, fighting the tide of emotion threatening to spill from his eyes. He glanced around at the other diners, hoping no one was watching.
